Transit Insurance

From A to B, We’ve Got Your Move Covered
Whether you’re shifting down the street or across the country, there’s always a chance something could go wrong with your belongings in transit. Transit insurance steps in to protect your household goods and personal items whilst they’re being moved – whether you’re using professional movers, hiring a truck yourself, or even towing your own trailer.
If your stuff gets lost, pinched, or damaged on the way, you won’t be stuck paying to replace it all yourself.
What does transit insurance typically cover?
Transit insurance generally protects against physical loss or damage to your belongings during:
- Household moves (local or cross-country)
- Shifts between properties or storage facilities
- DIY moves or professional removals
You can expect cover for:
- Furniture, whiteware, and appliances
- Fragile items like electronics
- Clothing, décor, and general household bits and pieces
The policy typically covers accidental damage, theft, and weather-related problems whilst your items are in transit.
Many policies also offer optional extras like temporary storage cover (for items stored before or after the move) and protection for items you’ve packed yourself during DIY moves.
It’s worth noting that some home or contents insurance policies include limited transit cover, but this often excludes self-moves, longer journeys, or higher-value items.
Who needs transit insurance?
- Anyone moving house (whether you own or rent)
- First-home buyers moving into a new build
- Students or flatmates shifting between rentals
- People hiring professional movers or driving trucks/trailers themselves
What’s typically not covered?
- Pre-existing damage
- Items that weren’t packed properly
- Jewellery, cash, or collectibles (unless specifically declared)
- Overseas moves (you’ll need marine or international shipping insurance for these)
Other insurance to think about
Once you’ve moved, you’ll want to make sure your new place is properly protected. Contents insurance will cover your belongings day-to-day, whilst home insurance protects the property itself if you’re a homeowner.
